Graduate MSN FAQ and Application Instructions

The School of Nursing would like to invite you to attend one of our MSN Information Sessions. The Graduate Director will give you a general overview of our program offering, curriculum and the application process. During this information session, you will have the opportunity to ask more in-depth questions regarding the program. We do not have individual appointments unless you are a current student in the program.

Admission Timelines:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES

All requirements contained on these pages are superseded by the official information published in the University Catalog of the current academic year: CSULB Catalog - Nursing

Admission Requirements:

  1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN) is required
  2. Current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  3. Eligible for Admission to the Graduate Nursing Program at CSULB (see University Admission Requirements)
  4. A college-level course in statistics (Upper Division 300 and 400 level courses)
  5. A Physical/Health Assessment course which includes clinical practice or lab (Upper Division 300 and 400 level courses)
  6. A Pathophysiology course (Upper Division 300 and 400 level courses)
  7. An overall GPA of 3.0 or better in the undergraduate program;
  8. All prerequisites must have a grade of B or better.

If you are applying for a Certificate program and creating your Cal State Apply, select Certificate as the Degree Goal. This is where you will find all three graduate certificate options:

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure the correct specialty is chosen. The School of Nursing cannot change the specialty indicated by the applicant on the application, nor reconsider applicants who apply incorrectly.

Status of Application & Admission Timelines:

Transferring in graduate level coursework:

Applicants who anticipate in transferring completed graduate level coursework for evaluation and approval from another university will need to wait until you are officially admitted into the CSULB Master of Science in Nursing program. Applicants can only transfer a maximum of 9 units of approved graduate coursework into MSN program. You CANNOT transfer Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology, and Advanced Physical Assessment with a Lab (these courses need to be taken at CSULB to prepare you for the Comprehensive Examination and the National Certification).
